Purpose of Technique Fundamental #1
The double leg take-down or Morote-gari is the most common way trained and untrained aggressors will try to take you to the ground in an effort to control your movement. The sprawl and spin is designed to counter the double-leg and place you in the advantageous position of being on the opponent’s back. This series is the first in a student’s education and prepares them for this threat. It takes a great deal of time to develop the quickness necessary to perform this maneuver, but it places you in a good position to enter range three. It also introduces the student to the rear-naked -choke or Hadak-jime.
Note: You can grapevine your legs around uke’s if you wish to increase pressure on the choke.
