Baehr Fundamental #7

Fundamental #7:  Simultaneous Block and Elbow with Ippon Seoi- nage

  1. Both fighter’s step into fighting stance.
  2. Uke: Throws a Circular or Round-house Punch
  3. Tori: Simultaneously middle forearm block (LH) and vertical punch (RH).
  4. Tori: Grasp the Uke’s forearm with your blocking arm (LH).
  5. Tori: Execute a rising elbow strike to the Uke’s chin (RH).
  6. Tori: Bring the shuto strike down on the Uke’s collarbone (RH).
  7. Tori: Drop to your knees and execute the shoulder throw.

Note: If executing Ippon-seoi-nage, move your right-hand under Uke’s armpit and bump him/her on your back with your hips. (optional)

Note: If executing Seoi-otoshi, move your right-hand under Uke’s armpit and drop.(optional)

  1. Tori: Maintain control of Ukes arm and place him/her in a key- lock.

Warning: Uke must be skilled in forward roll break-fall. If this is practiced multiple times a crash mat should be used to lessen the impact.

Warning:

It is never a good idea to expose your back to an opponent. If Uke’s balance is not broken forwards, he/she can strike to the back of your neck, spine, and kidneys. If they’re able to warp their arm around your neck, they can counter throw you as they drop and you’ll be placed in a compromising position.

Note: Hip throw counters should be taught at this juncture of the students training.

Purpose of Technique Fundamental #7

In this series the student is mainly being taught that a response to an attack can be met with a simple throw. It also introduces the student to Ippon Seoi-nage (Shoulder Throw). It also flows into range three and continues the conflagration in range-three by introducing the student to the arm-bar from the mat.

The most common attack is the circular punch. I’ve seen this punch thrown from barrooms to playgrounds. This in not to be confused with a boxer’s hook. A circular punch is all arm and shoulder rotation while a boxer’s hook utilizes hip and shoulder rotation coupled with weight transfer from the back leg to the front leg. The hook is much more powerful but most unskilled fighters do not understand the nuances of the technique. Also the circular punch is slower and takes longer to develop, so it is easier to defend. Again we are reinforcing the simultaneous blocking and striking techniques. The forearm stops the Uke’s blow while you deliver a counterattacking linear blow to adversary’s solar-plexus. This only stuns the opponent while you grasp the Uke’s sleeve or arm.
