Purpose of Technique Fundamental #10

In series eight the student is introduced to the stomach throws. Suma-gaeshi is more to the side and Tomoe-nage is more to the center. It also reinforces the Distract and Attack theory of jujitsu. Note uke’s balance is broken forwards by using his/her head. In systems like Judo, the uniform would be used to break the balance, but in jujitsu the strikes, locks and chokes set-up the throw. These techniques can be found in the Fishtail Escape exercises and in Seiuchin kata.

This is a preemptive strike. It is called Sen-No-Sen in karate terms means taking initiative the second an attack has been initiated.  When the Uke tries to grab you while reaching with both hands, kick the Uke in the groin. This causes them to react. The blow should momentarily stun them. Palm strike upwards on the elbows to get them to resist by dropping their weight downwards to maintain the grip. Take advantage of the seconds it takes for the Uke to regain his/her composure and drop two shuto strikes down on top of their elbows. This too is a distraction, so you can double palm-heel strike under uke’s chin and wrap your hands around their neck. The double palm-heel strikes should disorient or knock-out the opponent. Pull Uke forwards and hook your foot between the opponent’s leg execute a straight leg Tomoe-nage or Suma-gaeshi throw. Roll on top of Uke as he/she rolls and drive an elbow to Uke’s face.

This type of sacrifice throw keeps takes you into range three. If you use a straight leg Tomoe-nage you can launch the opponent over your shoulders if you do not want to continue the fight on the ground. Still if you drop to the ground expect to continue the altercation in range three.
