[13.4.1] Section-13 Kaishaku: Counter to a Lead Hand Punch (O-guruma)

[13.4.1] Section-13 Kaishaku: Counter to a Lead Hand Punch

[Source:] [Isshin-ryu Black Belt] (Old Bunkai)

Rating: Basic

Note: When Matsumura tried and failed to capture Chinto the sailor he exchanged food and lodging for training. I believe the two things that kept Chinto from being captured was his ability to execute the jumping kick and to throw Matsumura when he was able to grasp him or when Matsumura executed the powerful karate punch. Mostly Chinto was fluid in his technique as should those learning the kata should be.

Note: In the Hanto version of this kata the repeating of the technique is usually ignored, but in this bunkai it is part of the self-defense technique. The karateka needs to be careful not to throw out the baby with the bath water.

Part-1 Attacker: Steps forward in Zenkutsu-dachi and Lunge Punches (Lead Hand)

  • Punch the solar plexus.

Part-2 Defender: Turn, Trap, and Hammer-fist Strike.

  • Step backwards into a crane stance.

Note: This removes all centerline targets.

  • Trap the punch with the rear hand. (LH)
  • Hammer-fist strike to the attacker’s groin or solar plexus. (RH)
  • Snap kick to the attacker’s groin or bladder to cause him to lean forwards.

Note: This is the kuzushi or opening-up technique.

Information: In the kata we square our hips to deliver this blow because the attacker will be in retreat.

Part-3 Defender: Turns and Throw with O-goshi or Tai-otoshi

  • Step backwards into a crane stance and pull the attacker forwards. (LH)
  • Grasp under the attacker’s armpit or wrap your arm around his/her neck. (RH)
  • Reap both of the attacker’s legs (RL) while stepping behind with the left leg (LL).
  • Square your hips and kick the attacker as he/she hits the ground.

Note: You can stomp, kick or armbar the attacker at this point.
