[Rating:] Basic

Part-1 First Attacker Charges (toward you from the front)

Part-2 Defender: Ridge-hand Strikes and Drive the Attacker into the Wall

  • When the attacker charges, ridge-hand strike behind the attacker’s ear using his/her momentum to drive their face into the wall at your back.

Theory: One of the early scenarios that dealt with this kata’s kaishaku had the karateka fighting with his/her back against a wall. When in life preservation self-defense, using the terrain around you as a weapon is not only acceptable it is a good idea. More modern instructors find the application limited and have extended the kaishaku, as already mentioned, to include simply fighting someone while in a side-stance. The theory applies in modern times as well. Back your opponent against a curb, to cause them to trip or use a bus stop enclosure as a weapon by driving their head into it. Use your surroundings as weapons.

Theory: Fighting with your back against the wall, prohibits an attack from behind and gives you only three windows of defense and attack. Attack can only come from either side or the front. Pressing your back into the wall can stop being thrown.

  • As you ridge hand attacker’s head, be ready when he/she bounces of the wall.

Part-3 Defender: Elbow Strike

  • Grasp the hair of the back of the attacker’s head as they bounce off the wall.
  • Elbow strike with right elbow to temple or bridge of the nose.

Note: Drive the attacker’s head back into the wall. If you desire, the attacker can be thrown to the ground at this point

Part-4 Defender: Kouchi-gari

Grasp the Attacker’s arm and shoulder and break the opponent’s balance.

  • Sweep the adversary’s foot and throw him/her to the ground.
