[T1.02] Kibisu-gaeshi: Variation-2 (Heel Pick from Front Kick)

[T1.02] Kibisu-gaeshi: Variation-2 (Heel Pick from Front Kick)

Translation: (Kibisu) one handed, (gaeshi) counter or to flip:

This is a variation of the heel-pick takedown. When uke tries to deliver a front-snap-kick, catch his/her heel or ankle with one hand. Drive your fist or palm into their face. Next drive your other forearm into uke’s thigh while rotating your shoulders.  This motion will throw uke to the tatami (mat).

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

Note: Do not let uke grab you or your clothing for support. When he/she is on one leg their balance has been compromised.

AOKK Category:
  • Takedowns
Opening Technique:

Trap uke’s kick and strike to the face or throat.

Karate Version of Kuzushi:

Trapping the opponent’s leg places him/her on one leg so their balance can be broken in any direction.  A strike to the face breaks their balance backwards, and a rotation of your hips will direct the throw to the side.

Execution:
  • Time uke’s snap kick and move backwards. Capture his/her heel or ankle.

Note: Under-hook uke’s ankle or heel with one hand and forearm strike with the free arm.

  • Drive the forearm of your free hand into uke’s thigh while rotating your shoulders.
Grips:
  1. Grasp uke’s ankle or heel with one hand and forearm strike with the free arm.
  2. Under-hook uke’s ankle or heel with one hand and forearm strike with the free arm.

Warning: Do not go to the ground if there are more than one attacker. Do not go to the ground if there is a lot of debris than can cut you or could be used as a weapon.

Note: Follow this technique with an arm-bar, mount above the hips, or stand up and simply walk away. If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission
