[T1.04] Kibisu-gaeshi: Variation-4 (Heel Pick with Takedown)

[T1.04] Kibisu-gaeshi: Variation-4 (Heel Pick with Takedown)

Translation: (Kibisu) one handed, (gaeshi) counter to to flip:

This is a variation of the heel-pick takedown. When uke tries to deliver a front-snap-kick, catch his/her heel or ankle with the rear hand. In this throw we demonstrate that uke can be thrown in any direction once he/she is balancing on one foot.  In variation-two uke is thrown in the more traditional backwards motion. In this technique he/she will be thrown to the side.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

Note: Do not let uke grab you or your clothing for support. When he/she is on one leg their balance has been compromised.

AOKK Category:
  • Takedowns
Opening technique:

Grab uke’s clothing and shin kick uke’s supporting leg.

Karate Version of Kuzushi:

Trapping the opponent’s kicking leg places them on one leg. this makes throwing them in any direction easier. Striking or grasping the opponent’s shoulder turns the opponent, so the back of their knee can be kicked out from under the attacker.

Execution:
  • Time uke’s snap kick and move backwards.
  • Capture his/her heel or ankle with your rear hand.
  • Reach across uke’s body and grasp his/her shoulder, collar, or lapel.
  • Turn your hips, thigh, and knee into uke’s supporting leg and throw them to the ground.
Grips:
  1. Grasp uke’s ankle or heel with one hand and grasp his/her opposite lapel with the other.

Warning: Do not go to the ground if there are more than one attacker. Do not go to the ground if there is a lot of debris than can cut you or could be used as a weapon.

Note: Follow this technique with an arm-bar, mount above the hips, or stand up and simply walk away. If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
