[T1.06] Kuchiki taoshi: (Single Leg Takedown)

Translation: (Kuchiki) Dead Tree (taoshi) Drop: Single leg takedown.

This throw is also known as the dead tree drop, but it is more commonly known by its wrestling term single-leg-takedown. There are many variations to this throw. In the example Tori wraps his/her arm around uki’s thigh or Knee.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

Warning: Be aware that if you shoot in to make this take-down you’re exposed to a knee strike or a kick from the opponent.

AOKK Category:
  • Takedowns
Opening Technique:

This throw is usually done from the clinch. It is always a good idea to strike uke in the head before attempting this technique. Break the opponent’s balance backwards. Get the opponent defending the upper body while grasping his/her wrist and then shoot low for the throw or takedown. You can also simply drop into the Single Leg takedown. I’ve sparred with skilled wrestlers that can execute this move before you’re aware they’ve initiated the takedown. The wrestler does not control the arm as done in the traditional version of the throw, and they are still proficient with the technique.

Karate Version of Kuzushi:

If this throw comes from a clinch, first head butt the attacker’s nose to loosen their grip and break his/her balance backwards. Once you drop for the takedown drive your shoulder into the opponent to break the attacker’s balance backwards.

Execution:

Demonstrated Attack:

  1. Clinch

Demonstrated Response:

  • Release uke’s neck and break ukes’ balance backwards with a push or strike (RH).
  • Grasp uke’s wrist and pull him/her arm downwards (LH).

Note: This prevents the guillotine choke or head lock.

  • In this throw you wrap your right arm around uke’s knee.
  • Lift uke’s leg and drive him/her backwards, with your shoulders, while pulling uke’s heel forwards.

Note: This move places uke on one leg giving you the ability to throw him/her in any direction. Your head should remain within uke’s hip line.

Note: If your head is on the outside, of this throw, your opponent can place you in a guillotine choke. It is important to keep your head inside. In the example above you have intertwined the foot forcing uke to go down, so it Is less important where you place the head.

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: This throw means you have chosen the mount, so follow the mount immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
