[T1.08] Kuchiki-taoshi: Variation-2 (Single Leg from Trapped Knee Strike)

[T1.08] Kuchiki-taoshi: Variation-2 (Single Leg from Trapped Knee Strike)

Translation: (Kuchiki) Dead Tree, (taoshi) Drop: Single Leg Takedown

This is another version of the single-leg-takedown. There are many variations to this throw. In this example uke’s tries to deliver a knee strike. First tori must forearm block the knee while trapping uke’s leg or knee. Tori under-hooks the knee and drives a forearm forwards taking uke to the tatami (mat).

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision

Note: You can slide your hand to the ankle of calf to better control the throw.

Opening technique:

Block uke’s knee strike. The forearm is the most effective method because it has a larger surface area, but the point of the elbow inflicts fight ending pain. The hard the knee strike the more pain the point of the elbow inflicts.

Karate Version of Kuzushi:

Drive the forearm into the adversary’s thigh to stop the knee strike and wrap your arm around the leg. Lift the leg and drive the forearm and shoulder into the attacker’s midsection. This breaks the opponent’s balance backwards.

Execution:
  • Time uke’s knee strike and forearm block the attack.
  • Next capture his/her knee.
  • Drive your forearm forwards while pulling up on uke’s leg.
  • Throw uke backwards and to the ground.

Note: Once uke is on one leg their balance has been compromised even when they tie-off to you.

Grips:
  1. Drive your forearm into uke’s thigh (LH). Under-hook uke’s leg (RH).

Note: These variations are the jujutsu portion of a student’s training and show variations of the same or similar application. Not all throws come from a grappling situation.

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: This throw may force you into a mount, so follow the mount immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
