[T2.01] Osoto-gari: Variation-1 (Reaping with Tiger Mouth Choke)

[T2.01] Osoto-gari: Variation-1 (Reaping with Tiger Mouth Choke)

Translation: (O) major (soto) outside (gari) reaping

These variations of the throws are the jujutsu portion of a student’s training. Not all throws are made while in a grappling environment. The jujitsu practitioner must be able to make a throw as a counter to an attack or as an extension of his/her counterattack to end a conflagration. This training has age restrictions. It does, however, contain the real spirit of range two self-defense.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

Note:  This technique is for a life preservation situation only. It is not to be used during randori, yet it should be mastered with a training partner.

AOKK Category:
  • Reaps
Opening Technique:

Block uke’s round house punch. This places you inside his/her standing guard. Hit uke in the throat with a Tiger’s Mouth choke. This is a simultaneous block and strike. Simultaneous technique must be perfected by the student before this technique can be fully developed.

Execution:
  • Trap uke’s punching arm. This prevents his/her escape.
  • Strike to the throat with a tiger’s mouth strike and choke. Clamp down with your hand making the choke.

Note:  If you’re reaping with the right leg, pull uke onto his/her right leg by pulling hard to your left with your left hand and pushing forwards with your right.

  • Step to the side of uke about one foot from his/her lead foot and place most of your weight on the left leg.
  • Swing your right leg behind uke’s lead foot or calf and reap backwards.
  • Guide the attacker’s head towards the ground using the Tiger’s Mouth choke.
Grips:
  1. Trap uke’s wrist/sleeve with you left hand, strike and choke with the right.

Warning: In Practice never strike uke to the throat. You may substitute a palm strike the chest. Never throw an opponent with this technique unless it is in a life preservation situation.

Warning: Do not teach this technique to anyone under the age of eighteen.

Note: If you follow this technique to the ground be ready to mount above the adversary’s hips and follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, head butts, and elbow strikes. If possible, choke out the opponent.
