[T2.03] Ouchi-gari: (Major Inner Reaping)
Translation: (O) Major (Uchi) Inner (Gari) Reaping
This throw can be made after you’ve blocked and stepped inside the attacker’s punch or if the attacker has placed you in the clinch. You can deliver a knee strike as you step between the opponent’s leg. Once you’ve hooked inside the attacker’s leg drive your forearm into the opponent’s chest or pull the back of their collar and force them backwards. Step forwards and slide your rear leg between the opponent’s legs turn your hips on a 45° angle and reap the attacker’s leg.
Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.
AOKK Category:
- Reaps
Technical Information:
Traditional Throwing Method: Break the opponent’s balance backwards to the left-rear-corner. First, pull the attacker forward with your right-hand so he/she steps forward with his/her left foot. Before his/her foot lands and grips the floor, reverse direction and shove his/her left shoulder backwards. Pull the attacker’s right-arm forwards with your left-arm while pushing uke’s shoulder backwards with your right -arm. Turn your hips slightly to the side and insert your right-leg between the attacker’s legs. Point your toes and reap the attacker’s left leg backwards.
Karate Throwing Method: This throw can be made after you’ve blocked and stepped inside the attacker’s punch or if the attacker has placed you in the clinch. You can deliver a knee strike as you step between the opponent’s leg. Once you’ve hooked inside the attacker’s leg drive your forearm into the opponent’s chest or pull the back of their collar and force them backwards to the ground. You must turn the attacker’s shoulders so they’re falling to the left-rear-corner. Turn your hips slightly to the side and insert your right-leg between the attacker’s legs. Point your toes and reap the attacker’s left leg backwards.
Note: You cannot allow the attacker to lean forwards, or they can counter and reap your leg throwing you backwards
Opening Technique:
When uke reaches to control your movement, strike them in the face. Drop the striking hand and either grasp the opponent’s lapels, collar, or wrap your arm under his/her armpit. You can also pin the attacker’s elbow and use the opponent’s neck to throw them. Lift them up on their toes.
Execution:
- Push uke backwards while pulling him/her upwards via your grip.
Note: You can start by pulling uke forwards to get them to pull backwards.
- Pull, lift, and twist the opponent so their weight is off the foot you want to reap.
- Step with your rear leg past uke’s legs.
- Slip your leg between the opponent’s legs and reap backwards with your heel.
Note: Your thigh should impact uke’s thigh. When uke is on one leg, he/she can be thrown in any direction.
Note: Remember to twist uke on an angle with the leg being reaped as the pivot point.
Note: Moving the shoulders are very important. A variation of this technique can be done by wrapping your arms around uke, but you still need to get his/her weight on the reaping leg. Push forwards and reap backwards on uke’s leg.
Note: If you go to the ground with the opponent, be sure to land with all your body weight on the attacker.
Grips:
- The traditional judo grip is left hand on uke’s right sleeve and your right hand on uke’s left lapel. Remember to bend your elbow to lift uke and pull him/her in tight.
- You can also use an under-hook. Hook your right arm (RH) under uke’s left armpit. Grip uke’s right sleeve or wrist with your left hand (LH).
- You can also reach around with your right hand and grasp the side of uke’s belt. Lift up with the right hand. Grip uke’s right sleeve or wrist with your left hand and pull him/her sideways.
- You can also grasp the back of uke’s collar with your right hand (RH), and grapevine uke’s right arm with your left arm (LH).
- You can pin uke’s elbow and trap his/her head or neck.
Note: This technique reaps only one leg while you step behind the opponent throwing him/her backwards.
Note: Your body momentum must be moving forwards as you reap inside the opponent’s leg. It takes two points to maintain your balance. Standing on both feet are two points, or one foot and being tied-off to something. If that something being tied off to is you, then you can throw uke in any direction using their support leg as a pivot point.
Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.
Note: Follow this technique with an arm-bar, mount above the hips, or simply walk away. If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
Counter: Do not let your head get pushed backwards. Keep your upper-body forwards and throw the attacker with Osoto-otoshi, Osoto-gari, or Osoto-guruma when they attempt the throw. you can use this throw to counter uki-waza.
