[5.5.3] Section-5 Kaishaku: Counter to a Front Kick
[5.5.3] Section-5 Kaishaku: Counter to a Front Kick
[Source:] Isshin-ryu Black-belt
[Rating:] Basic
Information: In this version of this kata, the lower hand does go behind the buttocks and traps the kick. After the trap and application of the Tiger’s Mouth choke, the arm wraps around the leg to facilitate the throw.
Information: Many schools will stop the bunkai at the point of the throw, but we take it a bit further to show potential self-defense beyond the perimeter of the kata.
Part-1 Attacker: Front Kicks
Part-2 Defender: Trap Kick
- Step outside the kick and trap the leg with your rear hand.
- Wrap your arm around the attacker’s leg destabilizing the opponent. (LH)
Note: The arm under-hooks the leg.
Theory: Stepping to side avoid the kick. Even if you do not trap the kick, you’re not struck by it either.
Part-3 Defender: Throws and Figure Four Chokes
- Lift the attacker’s leg until he/she falls backwards.
Note: You can also reap the support leg if you desire to do so.
Note: Maintain control of the leg.
- Follow them to the ground.
- Place them in a Figure four leg choke or Triangle choke.
Note: You can grasp the adversary’s arm and place them in the cradle position if to prevent being struck.
Part-4 Defender: Hold until Attacker Passes Out
- Apply pressure on the attacker via the choke until he/she loses consciousness.
[End Series]
Note: It is difficult to grasp the attacker’s kick with your lower hand, but if you miss the the kick is blocked and in the second version you can step forward and outside the attacker. This sets up the clinch and throw. Like all self defense techniques it must be practiced and tested in sparring (kumite). Leg throws are the most popular sparring takedown.
