[T3.05] Kosoto-gari: Var-2 (Minor Outer Reap w Ankle Hooking)

[T3.05] Kosoto-gari: Var-2 (Minor Outer Reap w Ankle Hooking)

Translation: (Ko) Minor (Soto) outer (Gari) reaping

This is a good takedown that uses your entire body to execute this technique. By hooking and reaping uke’s leg you can destabilize his/her position. The problem with this throw is that it commits you to continuing the fray in range three. It is a decent technique if your better on the ground than you are standing but it limits your mobility.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

Warning: Be careful when executing this technique because uke’s ankle can be injured.

AOKK Category:
  • Sacrifice Throws
Opening Technique:

Punch and elbow strike to unbalance the opponent to get inside the attacker’s defense. Place uke in the clinch. You must try to get uke in an upright position with their feet shoulder width apart for the best results. If uke lowers their centerline, this throw becomes more difficult, yet it is not impossible to execute. Twisting uke’s shoulders, while breaking the opponent’s balance, can make this throw easier.

Karate Version of Kuzushi:

Grasp the opponent’s shoulder (LH) or wrap your arm around the attacker’s elbow and create a shoulder/elbow lock. Horizontal elbow strike (RH) to break the opponent’s balance sideways. Drop your body weight and hook the attacker’s ankle to break the attacker’s balance forward on an angle.

Execution:
  • Pull downwards on uke’s arm in the direction of the throw. Push up on uke’s collar or armpit in the direction of the throw.

Note: Twisting uke’s upper-body to break their balance can be added to make the throw easier.

  • Drop your weight on the side you’re going to throw the opponent.
  • Strike uke’s ankle with your thigh to break their balance.
  • Hook your leg around uke’s ankle and pull uke sideways and downward.
  • Quickly mount the opponent above the hipline.

Grips:

  1. Arm and Collar.
  2. Arm and under-hook.
Two Key Components for AOKK Practice:

When practicing this throw there are to key components to the endeavor. The problem with this throw is the fact that it is a sacrifice technique. The ground may not be the best place to be in an altercation, so the student must first practice throwing his/her adversary and roll immediately into the standing position. This must become a reflex action. The second component is throwing the opponent and following him/her into a mount. This may be necessary if you’re trying to restrain an adversary until help arrives. This too can be used in the sport aspect of the art as well. These two components are one of the things that separate our practice from that of more sport oriented martial arts.

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: Follow this technique with a mount above the hips. Follow the mount immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, knee strikes, head butts, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
