[T5.00] Circle Throw: (Tomoe) circle, (nage) throw

[T5.00] Circle Throw:

(Tomoe) circle, (nage) throw:

This can be an offensive as-well-as a defensive throw. You can grab the opponent and pull them forward and throw them, or if the attacker pushes you, use their momentum against them and make the throw. All you need to do is drop backwards while placing your foot in their abdomen and execute the throw.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

AOKK Category:
  • Sacrifice Throws
Opening Technique:

Punch or elbow strike to work inside the opponent’s circle of combat. Wrap your hands around uke’s neck or grasp both lapels.

Karate Version of Kuzushi:

In Tomo-nage you can grasp the adversary and pull him/her forwards after pushing him/her backwards. This throw requires you to grasp the opponent.

Example:

Uke: One two punches.

Tori:

  • Block the lead punch. (LH)
  • Grasp uke’s neck. (LH)
  • Block the second punch. (RH)
  • Grasp uke’s neck. (LH)
  • Throw uke with Tomoe nage.
Execution:
  • Grasp uke around the neck or grasp uke’s lapels.
  • Pull uke backwards and plant your foot in uke’s hip crease as you fall to the floor.
  • Roll on your back while straightening your leg and throw uke over your head.

Note: If you hook your Leg behind uke’s thigh as they roll over your stomach, you can roll with them and end up over his/her hipline, or you can release the opponent and let him/her fly so you can get to your feet.

Grips:
  1. The traditional grip is to grab both lapels.
  2. Both hands behind uke’s neck.
  3. In jujitsu this throw can be made utilizing the back of uke’s neck by using a guillotine choke.

Warning: If the throw is facilitated by the guillotine choke, release the choke and tie-off to uke’s clothing before practicing this throw.

  1. You can also grip around and behind the neck.

Note: Do not interlock your fingers when making the two handed grasp around uke’s neck, or your fingers can be broken. Overlap the hands.

  1. One can also use a double under hook, but you must roll with uke.

Note: This is the least desirable of the grips.

Warning: To control uke’s flight keep your knee bent. If you straighten your leg uke will launch over your head.

Two Key Components for AOKK Practice:

When practicing this throw there are to key components to the endeavor. The problem with this throw is the fact that it is a sacrifice technique. The ground may not be the best place to be in an altercation, so the student must first practice throwing his/her adversary and roll immediately into the standing position. This must become a reflex action. The second component is throwing the opponent and following him/her into a mount. This may be necessary if you’re trying to restrain an adversary until help arrives. This too can be used in the sport aspect of the art as well. These two components are one of the things that separate our practice from that of more sport oriented martial arts.

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: Follow this technique with an arm-bar, mount above the hips, or simply stand up and walk away. If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, knee strikes, head butts, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
