[T5.01] Tomoe-nage: Variation-1 (Circle Throw with Guillotine Choke)

Translation: (Tomoe) circle, (nage) throw

This throw can be made if the opponent tries a double leg takedown and places his/her head to the side of your body. You must catch the adversary before they can drop low enough to make the throw. Wrap your arm around his/her neck and tie-off. Preventing uke form dropping can be done by pulling up on the guillotine choke.

Warning:  This technique can cause permanent damage to your opponent,

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

Judo Category:

AOKK Category:
  • Sacrifice Throws
Opening Technique:

Uke shoots forward for a double-leg (Morote-gari) takedown.

Warning: If the throw is facilitated by the guillotine choke, release the choke and tie-off to uke’s clothing before practicing this throw, or your opponent’s neck can be injured.

Karate Version of Kuzushi:

When the opponent shoots forward for a takedown or a tackle, place the attacker in a guillotine choke. Knee strike to get the adversary to bend forward.  The throw is facilitated by the choke using the adversary’s forward momentum. Dropping backwards break the attacker’s balance forwards so they can be throw over the shoulder.

Execution:
  • Grasp uke around the neck or grasp uke’s lapels.
  • Pull uke backwards and plant your foot in uke’s hip crease as you fall to the floor.
  • Hook the foot under uke’s thigh and roll with uke.
  • Roll on your back and throw uke over your head.

Note: You should roll over the opponent’s hipline.

Grips:
  1. Place uke’s in a headlock or guillotine choke.

Warning: Keep your knees bent and roll with your opponent. You’ll automatically be fighting in range-three at this point, but you’ll have the advantage.

Note: Maintain the choke after landing in the mount above the opponent’s hips. Follow immediately with increased pressure on the choke by arching your back. If the opponent pulls free begin open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, knee strike, head butts, and elbow strikes. If you choose to continue the fight, you can apply another choke or go for a submission. You could also simply stand up and walk away
