[T6.03] Tai-ototshi: Variation-2 (Body Drop with One Knee)

[T6.03] Tai-ototshi: Variation-2 (Body Drop with One Knee)

Translation: (Tai) body, (otoshi) drop

This is another tai-otoshi variation. Dropping your body centerline and driving your leg backwards creates the trip with the added momentum of pulling uke off his/her feet by dropping your body weight. In this variation the technique is considered a sacrifice throw and not a dropping throw because you’re on the ground as the adversary is thrown forward.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

Judo Category:
  • Te-Waza (Hand Technique)
AOKK Category:
  • Sacrifice Throws
Opening Technique:

This throw can be applied form a clinch, or when you’ve hooked uke’s neck and gripped his/her sleeve.

Karate Version of Kuzushi:

To start this throw the opponent should aggressively come at you, but it will also work from a clinch. Trap or grasp the opponent’s wrist (LH). Strike the side of the adversary’s neck with a ridge hand or forearm and grasp the back of the attacker’s collar (RH). Pull down on the opponent’s wrist and push backwards with your (RH). Note: The strike to the neck will momentarily stun the adversary. Twist the opponent’s shoulders. Extend your leg and rotate your hips pulling him forwards. As you drop to one knee and cut the opponent’s feet from under him/her.

Execution:
  • Grip uke in a normal manner.
  • Pull down and pin uke’s arm.
  • Lift uke by his/her collar.
  • As you’re making the throw, drop your body weight by going to one knee.

Note: Executing this variation of the technique can make the throw easier especially if uke drops their center of gravity.

Grips:
  1. The traditional judo grip is left hand on uke’s right sleeve/wrist and your right hand on uke’s left lapel. Remember to bend your elbow to lift uke and pull him/her in tight.

Note: This throw can also be performed using a joint lock.

Warning: It is dangerous to turn your back on the opponent.

Warning: Bend the knee that is being used for the trip slightly to prevent the knee from being hyperextended.

Two Key Components for AOKK Practice:

When practicing this throw there are to key components to the endeavor. The problem with this throw is the fact that it is a sacrifice technique. The ground may not be the best place to be in an altercation, so the student must first practice throwing his/her adversary and roll immediately into the standing position. This must become a reflex action. The second component is throwing the opponent and following him/her into a mount. This may be necessary if you’re trying to restrain an adversary until help arrives. This too can be used in the sport aspect of the art as well. These two components are one of the things that separate our practice from that of more sport oriented martial arts.

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: Follow this technique with an arm-bar, mount above the hips, or simply walk away. If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
