[T6.13] One Arm Side Dropping Technique: Ippon Yoko Otoshi
[T6.13] One Arm Side Dropping Technique:
Ippon (one) Yoko (Side) Otoshi (drop) Technique:
If an attacker is aggressive and starts their attack by pushing, they’re asking for this throw. Use the aggressor’s momentum to throw them. Normally, in our system Uki-waza is made using both hands, but in this throw we use only one of uke’s arms. The downside is this is a sacrificing throw that places you on the ground, but if you adequately fling them forwards you will have time to get back on your feet.
Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.
AOKK Category:
- Sacrifice Throws
Open Technique:
This can be done from the clinch or if you can get inside a fighter’s punch. I like to add a strike just to keep the opponent thinking.
Note: Watch the opponent’s free hand.
Karate Version of Kuzushi:
There are a couple of ways to break the opponent’s balance. The first is if the opponent punches with their right hand. Trap the attacker’s wrist with your (LH) and under-hook the same arm with your (RH). Use the attacker’s momentum to break their balance forwards before dropping for the throw.
If this throw is used from a clinch, you must push the opponent backwards to get him/her to push forwards. Over-hook the adversary’s arm with your (LH) and under-hook the same arm with your (RH) before dropping and making the throw.
Execution:
- Push uke backwards until he/she pushes forwards.
- Stop pushing and immediately pull uke forwards and off balance.
- Pull up on his/her shoulder, and over-hook uke’s arm (LH). Quickly under-hook uke’s arm with your other arm (RH).
- Drop to your bottom placing all your weight on uke.
- Shoot your lead leg in front of uke’s support leg and pull him/her down and sideways over your extended leg to the tatami.
Note: The support leg’s foot should be trapped by your thigh and groin.
Note: This is a sacrifice technique which means you’ll be down on the tatami, so practice your recovery in the dojo, so that it happens automatically on the street.

Two Key Components for AOKK Practice:
When practicing this throw there are to key components to the endeavor. The problem with this throw is the fact that it is a sacrifice technique. The ground may not be the best place to be in an altercation, so the student must first practice throwing his/her adversary and roll immediately into the standing position. This must become a reflex action. The second component is throwing the opponent and following him/her into a mount. This may be necessary if you’re trying to restrain an adversary until help arrives. This too can be used in the sport aspect of the art as well. These two components are one of the things that separate our practice from that of more sport oriented martial arts.
Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.
Note: Follow this technique with an arm-bar, mount above the hips, or simply walk away. If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
