[T6.14] Obi-otoshi: (Belt Drop)

[T6.14] Obi-otoshi: (Belt Drop) [1st kyu]

Translation: (Obi) belt, (otoshi) drop

This throw is found in the first few moves of Wansu kata. The sidestep with the circular move is to get behind the opponent. The hand movement signifies the grasping and lifting of the attacker’s’ obi (belt). The down block represents throwing the opponent over your knee. You must lift with your legs, so the first move is to lower your centerline, and this is done by stepping into a horse stance via the crescent foot motion.

Note: This is not a preferred AOKK throw and is only part of the curriculum because of its’ ties to Wansu kata.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

AOKK Category:

Grips:
  1. Grip under uke’s obi with the (LH), and Palm strike and push uke’s head (RH).
  2. Grip under uke’s obi with the (LH), and grasp uke’s collar (RH).

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: Follow this technique with an arm-bar, mount above the hips, or simply walk away. If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
