[T6.16] Obi Tai-otoshi: (Belt Dropping Throw)

Translation: (Obi) belt, (Tai) body, (Otoshi) drop

This throw is a variation of Obi-otoshi and Tai-otoshi. The belt is a legitimate piece of clothing that can be used for facilitating the throw. Some sport systems do not allow you to grip the obi.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

Opening Technique:

In many confrontations you will begin by pushing and shoving trying to get the upper-hand. Most males wear a belt thus making this throw possible. If you start from a standing position you must get inside and clinch to make this throw effectively.

Execution:
  • Grip the back of uke’s obi (belt) and collar.
  • Turn and pull uke over your extended leg.
  • Throw uke on to their face.

Note: You can drop them on top of your knee if choose.

Grips:
  1. Grip under uke’s obi with the (LH), and grasp uke’s collar (RH)
  2. Grip under uke’s obi with the (LH), and grasp uke’s arm (RH).

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: Follow this technique with an arm-bar, mount above the hips, or simply walk away. If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
