[T8.07] O-goshi: Variation-1 (Drop Major Hip Throw)
[T8.07] O-goshi: Variation-1 (Drop Major Hip Throw)
Translation: (O) major, (goshi) hip
Dropping to your knees can increase the force applied to the throw. The downside is uke is not thrown as hard to the ground, and you must stand after the throw.
Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.
AOKK Category:
- Hip Throws
Opening Technique:
This is a close quarters technique. After you close by striking and kicking, you must control one of the opponent’s wrists. An elbow strike to the adversary’s, head will cause him/her to lift their arm and enable you to reach around their waist or under-hook their armpit. When uke drops their centerline, to prevent being thrown, you must change directions or drop your centerline to complete the original throw. This is one of those throws that allows this flexibility.
Execution:
- Pull uke forwards and insert your right arm under his/her armpit and place it around uke’s waist. Grasp uke’s wrist or sleeve with the other.
- Turn 180° and drive your hips backwards breaking uke’s balance.
- Pull uke up on your hips and back.
- When uke drops their centerline, you must drop to your knees to break his/her balance.
- Throw him/her across your hips as you complete your shoulder rotation.
Warning: You are on your knees, so it will take a little time to get to your feet. This gives the opponent time to mentally and physically recover.
Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.
Note: Follow this technique with an arm-bar, mount above the hips, or simply walk away. If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
