[T10.00] Kata-guruma: Standing Fireman’s Carry

[T10.00] Kata-guruma: Standing Fireman’s Carry

Translation: (Kata-guruma) shoulder wheel, (Wansu Kata)

This is an AOKK root throw, but it is not a throw that will be available when you’re fighting an opponent that is skilled in range-two and three. This technique is however found in one of our katas, so it will always be a throw that is part of the AOKK curriculum. The adversary can be thrown to the side, behind, or as in Wansu kata in front. Wansu is known as the dumping throw kata.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision

AOKK Category:
  • Dumping Throw
Opening Technique:

Kata-guruma is an offensive technique used when you’re grappling with an opponent. It can be performed from the stand or from the tatami (mat). This throw can be executed when an attacker reaches to grasp you for control. A palm-heel strike to the face can also be used if your trying to tie-off to the opponent’s collar or lapel. It is most effective when you drive an upward ridge-hand strike into their groin and tie-off to their clothing. This move breaks their balance by getting them up on toes. Once you’ve driven a ridge-hand into the groin and tie-off, follow this by driving your shoulder into uke’s hip crease.

Note: Anytime you lower your center of gravity while facing an opponent, it places you in a vulnerable position.

Note: This throw takes good leg strength. Practice lifting with your legs.

Execution:
  • Grasp uke’s wrist and pull the them forwards.
  • Shoot your arm between his/her legs. Drive the forearm up sharply striking the groin. This gets uke on his/her toes.
  • Drive the shoulder deep into uke’s waist while pulling uke’s wrist to load them on your back and shoulders.
  • Stand up and drop uke to the front, rear, or side.

Note: In a life preservation situation drop the attacker on a curb or sprinkler head. Find something that will injure the opponent.

Grips:
  1. The throw works by driving your forearm between uke’s legs while grasping uke’s collar, arm, or wrist with the other.

Note: If you’re practicing a lot of throws it is a good practice to use crash mats.

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: Follow this technique with an arm-bar, mount above the hips, or simply walk away. If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.

Kata Wansu Application

[6.1.0] Wansu Section-6 Bunkai: Counter to a Reverse Punch

Part-1 Attacker Reverse Punches

Part-2 Defender: High Block Punch and Fireman Carry Throw

  • Grasp the attacker’s hand with the hand that blocked high.
  • Pull the attacker off balance.
  • Thrust the lower hand between the attacker’s legs.
  • Pull attacker over your shoulders for Fireman’s Carry throw or Dumping Throw.

Note: You must get the attacker up on his toes, so you must strike the testicles with the forearm to force him to his toes. The most affective groin strike is when the testicles are slapped upward into the trunk.

Part-3 Defender: Shoulder Throw (Alternative)

  • Pull attacker over the shoulders and back to throw.
