[T10.03] Koshi-guruma: Varitaion-1 (Reverse Neck Wheel)
[T10.03] Koshi-guruma: Varitaion-1 (Reverse Neck Wheel)
Translation: (Hip) neck, (guruma) wheel
This throw is applicable if, while grappling, you can place the opponent in a rear headlock. A rear headlock by itself is not a very good technique even though it is very common. From the headlock position an adversary can strike you with either hand while yours are occupied by maintaining the hold. It becomes effective when you pull the opponent on your back and throw them to the tatami (mat). You have the option to let them drop or follow them to the tatami.
Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.
AOKK Category:
- Shoulder & Back Throws
Opening Technique:
The simplest method is to counter and attacker’s roundhouse punch and drive your forearm into his/her throat. Wrap your arm around his/her throat and place them in a reverse headlock. Once you’re in this position the opponent can be thrown via the headlock, or they can even be reaped with Osoto-gari.
Execution:
- Control uke’s wrist or sleeve after blocking punch.
- Drive your forearm into uke’s neck and wrap your arm around the neck placing him/her in a head lock.
- Step behind the opponent.
Note: Your feet will be in what is best described as musubi-dachi.
- Drive your hips backwards breaking uke’s balance.
- Pull uke up on your back by his/her neck and control his/her arm.
- To complete the throw, rotate your shoulders.
- Throw uke over your back and down to the tatami (mat).
Note: Uke should land on all fours or hands and knees. This exposes his/her back and opens them up to strikes and chokes.
Grips:
- Trap uke’s wrist with the other to prevent his/her countering the throw. Reach around the front of uke’s neck with one arm and tie-off to your clothing creating the headlock.
Warning: Relax your hold on uke’s neck while practicing this throw.
Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.
Note: If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes or choke him/her with a rear naked choke.
