[T10.05] Hiza-guruma: Varitaion-1 (Leg trap and Knee Wheel Throw)

[T10.05] Hiza-guruma: Varitaion-1 (Leg trap and Knee Wheel Throw)

Translation: (Hiza) Knee, (guruma) wheel

This technique is used when someone tries to round kick you. Trap the leg. Once the leg is trapped and uke is on one foot lift them and place your foot on their supporting knee and throw them in a circular motion. Once they’re on their toes the throw can be made easily.

Note: Either of your supporting feet can be used to trap the knee. Since the crossover Heel kick is a staple of Isshin-ryu it is demonstrated in the pictures.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

AOKK Category:
  • Reaps
Opening Technique:

Trap uke’s round kick with one arm and palm-heel strike the opponent in the face with the other.

Execution:
  • Block the round kick (LH). Wrap around uke’s waist (RH) and grab his/her clothing.
  • Lift uke until his/her toes are off the ground.
  • Step between uke’s legs with your support leg.
  • Place your foot on the side of uke’s knee or Crossover heel kick uke’s knee and keep your foot on uke’s right knee with your left foot.

Note: His/her knee becomes the fulcrum.

  • Continue to twist uke’s shoulders and throw them to the side.
  • Sweep the knee out and throw uke in a circular motion.

Note: You can under-hook or over-hook uke’s leg. With the under-hook, the blow is taken on the arm, but with the over-hook, you have taken the kick to the ribs.

Note: Uke can be thrown to either side. It purely depends upon your foot placement or preference

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: In a life preservation situation, throw the adversary into a stationary object.

Note: If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In this throw leg and knee locks can be effective.
