[T14.01] Yoko-gake: (Side Hooking Sacrifice Throw)

[T14.01] Yoko-gake: (Side Hooking Sacrifice Throw)

Translation: (Yoko) side, (gake) hooking

If you’re fighting a striker, it is a good idea to get in close because this takes them out of their comfort zone. You always want to take a striker to the ground. The AOKK student should be knowledgeable in all ranges of combat, and this is a technique that move straight from range two to three.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

Judo Category:
  • Yoko-sutemi-waza (side sacrifice technique)
AOKK Category:
  • Sweep
Opening Technique:

When you move from range one to rage-two you need to tie-up the attacker’s hands. If you want to take the opponent to the ground, pull them forwards. Next push the opponent backwards, when they resist, while lifting them so they’re on their toes.  You can pull and push the opponent back and forth to set this up from the clinch.

Karate Version of Kuzushi:

This throw is normally made from the clinch. First under-hook the attacker with your right arm. Over-hook the adversary’s other arm with your left arm. You can also wrap your arm around the attacker’s arm  locking his/her elbow with your left arm while tying off to the attacker’s clothing.  Next push the attacker backwards and when he/she pushes forward lift the opponent up on his/her toes to sweep their feet as you twist the adversary’s shoulders.

Execution:
  • Push the opponent up on his/her toes.
  • When they move up on his/her toes, sweep the sole of you your foot against theirs and drop twisting their shoulders in the direction of the throw.
  • Drop your weight and throw the attacker to the side.

Note: You sacrifice your position to get them on the tatami (mat), so you can begin grappling.

Grips:
  1. The traditional judo grip is left hand on uke’s right sleeve and your right hand on uke’s left lapel. Remember to bend your elbow to lift uke and pull him/her in tight.

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: Follow this technique with an arm-bar, mount above the hips, or simply walk away. If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
