[T9.03] Sukui-nage: Variation-3 (Leg Throw with Lapel)

[T9.03] Sukui-nage: Variation-3 (Leg Throw with Lapel)

Translation: (sukui) scooping, (nage) throw

This is a good counter to a hip throw, but it takes a lot of lower body strength.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision

AOKK Category:
  • Dumping Throws
Opening Technique:

When uke turns for his/her hip throw drop your weight, under hook his/her upper thigh and throw your free arm over uke’s shoulder and tie-off to their clothing (lapel). Your arm maybe over uke’s shoulder if he/she is trying to execute Ippon-seoi-nage.

Execution:
  • Drop your center of gravity into a horse-riding stance or a judo strong stance.
  • Drive your arm under (under-hook) the opponent’s upper thigh.
  • Throw your free arm over uke’s shoulder and grasp his/her lapel or clothing.
  • Lift with your legs pulling uke off the floor.
  • Dump uke on the mat.

Note: If this were a life preservation situation, plant the attacker’s face into the ground.

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: Follow this technique with a joint lock. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission, but in a life preservation situation deliver as many blows to the attacker’s head as quickly as you can until they’re no longer a threat.
