[T9.07] Sukui-nage: Variation-7 (Leg Thigh Throw)

[T9.07] Sukui-nage: Variation-7 (Leg Thigh Throw)

Translation: (sukui) scooping, (nage) throw

This is a response to a range-two combat scenario. A smaller fighter must get inside an opponent’s reach. Once inside the opponent’s reach you can execute this throw. This throw lifts uke by the leg and drives him/her backwards. It is a crude but effective technique. You may need to use this in conjunction with the Duck-Under technique. Pin uke’s shoulder by arching your back. This too is a crude but effective technique.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision

AOKK Category:
  • Dumping Throws
Opening Technique:

At some point in the confrontation, you will become close enough that you’re in a clinch. The simplest throw, from this position, is to grasp an opponent’s leg around the knee or thigh while lifting and pushing the opponent backwards.  You can deliver elbows and knees to set-up this technique.

Execution:
  • Get inside the opponent’s reach.
  • Scoop uke’s leg with your rear arm.

Note: Uke’s leg should rest in the crease of your elbow.

  • Drive your shoulders into the opponent while lifting the adversary’s leg.
  • Once the opponent is on one leg drive them to the ground.

Note: When an opponent is on one leg, there balance is compromised, and they can be thrown in any direction. It takes two points of contact with the earth to maintain balance.

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission, but in a life preservation situation deliver as many blows to the attacker’s head as quickly as you can until they’re no longer a threat.
