MC17.0 Jigoku-jime: (Single Lapel Choke)

MC17.0 Jigoku-jime: (Single Lapel Choke)

This choke requires only the use of one lapel. When this technique is done against the Turtle Position, grapplers know the technique as the Iron-cross. The Iron-cross is a hold, but in jujitsu we add a lapel choke. This is an example of the differences between jujitsu and wrestling. This is a possible attack from the sprawl and spin defense. This choke can also be made from the bottom or in the guarding position.

Warning: This technique should only be practiced with a qualified AOKK instructor present.

A. [Turtle Position (Top)]
Execution
  • Uke is in the turtle position.
  • Hook his/her arm closest to you with your leg.
  • Grasp uke’s lapel with one hand.
  • With your free arm grasp his other arm and roll backwards.
  • Pull the lapel towards your legs and arch your back.
  • Release the choke and armbar if uke taps, or the attacker passes out.
B. [Guarding Position (Bottom)]
Execution :

This choke requires only the use of one lapel. The figure-four keeps uke from moving in the direction of the choke. If uke can move his/her head in the direction you’re pulling the choke will be ineffective.

  • Place uke place in the guarding position (guard).
  • Grip Uke’s right lapel with your right hand.
  • Free your right leg and wrap it so uke’s neck is in the knee crease.
  • Shift your hips and pull back on uke’s lapel while holding his/her head in your knee crease.

Note: To increase pressure you can pull down on your ankle with your left-hand.

  • Release the choke if uke taps, or the attacker passes out.
