[ML1.1] Standard Arm-bar: (Mat Technique from the Standing Position)
[ML1.1] Standard Arm-bar: (Mat Technique from the Standing Position)
Warning: This technique should only be practiced with a qualified AOKK instructor present.
Execution:
Initially teach this from a standing position.
- Start with uke, on his/her back, on the tatami.
- Tori grasps uke’s wrist and pulls upwards lifting uke’s shoulder off the tatami (mat).
- Tori drives both feet under uke’s shoulder like a wedge.
Note: Keep your feet close together but keep enough distance to allow for uke’s arm.
Note: Tori’s thumb should be pointing away from your chest for proper alignment.
Note: This can also be taught by placing one foot over uke’s head to prevent him/her from rolling with the arm-bar as you drop backwards. You can also drive a heel thrust kick into the side of uke’s head as you push your leg over uke to prevent the roll.
- Squat down and press uke’s wrist against your chest.
Note: You must keep uke’s wrist tight against your chest or they’ll be able to pull away as you drop.
- Fall backwards to your bottom and pull uke’s arm towards your head.
Note: Pull the opponent as deep as you can to increase the power of the fulcrum.
- Roll uke’s arm until the elbow is pointing down and resting on your abdomen.
- Arch your back to apply pressure to uke’s elbow.
Note: When uke feels pain he/she must tap-out quickly to prevent injury. Uke should not tap until they feel compromised or in pain. Tapping too soon will give your fellow student a false sense of security.
Note: This technique must be taught when teaching the student fundamental number-two.
