[ML1.5] Arm-bar tie-off or basic counter: (Mat Technique from the Mount)
[ML1.5] Arm-bar tie-off or basic counter: (Mat Technique from the Mount)
This is the most basic counter. It should be taught to every beginning student. Placing a foot on uke’s arm and pushing forwards easily breaks this counter. You can also place your foot against uke’s head and push to break this counter. Many students will simply cradle the arm and rock side-to-side until uke gets tired and releases his/her grip. The tie-off is not the end of this counter. Shifting your hips into the opponent is equally as important. You must relieve the strain on the elbow and shoulder, and the only way to do that is to turn in the direction the lock is being pulled.
Warning: This technique should only be practiced with a qualified AOKK instructor present.
Execution:
- To prevent the arm-bar, grasp your trapped arm with your free arm and pull in the opposite direction.
- Shift your hips in the direction of the arm-bar in an effort to pull away.
- Stand up and execute Daki-age if possible.
Note: You can tie-off to the attacker’s arms or anything that prevents the arm-bar. Remember this is only a temporary solution. You must roll out of the lock.
