[Cntr-3.0] (Counter to a Hip & Sacrifice Throw-Knee Drop)
If your knee is on the tatami you cannot be thrown, but you can be struck. Once you’ve committed to this position grappling or mat technique will begin. This is not to say you cannot throw the opponent from this position.
Execution:
- (Uke) Turns their back and tries to land a hip throw.
- (Tori) Drops his/her body weight and places their weight on one knee.
Execution:
- (Uke) Drops to throw you with Sumi-gaeshi or Tomoe-nage.
- (Tori) Drops his/her body to one knee before uke can land the techniques and launch you forwards.
Note: Once you place your knee on the ground it is almost impossible to be thrown, but you are in a compromising position. This is illegal in judo competition, but not in jujitsu competition or in a self-defense situation.
Follow-up Technique:
- Tani-otoshi (Valley Drop) Grasp the opponent’s belt or obi and drop down and pull uke backwards. Practice getting back to your feet after making this throw to be in a superior fighting position.
