Also, the center portion of the weapon can be used to block and strike. This is a long-distance weapon. Do not let your adversary get too close. An attacker wielding a sai must get in close. Adversary:
- Standing Guarding Position
Defender:
- Stand in a Guarding Position and keep the tip of you Bo eye high.
- Move your hands towards the front of the Bo. Keep the tip at eye level so the opponent cannot see what you’re doing. If they see you’ve extended the length of your weapon they can respond to the attack.
Note: You Are making the rear of your weapon longer.
- Swing the rear of your weapon in a 45° upward strike.
Note: By keeping you Bo eye high your adversary cannot see the length of the back of your weapon. Cheating up on your grip can create a larger circle of combat. The assumption made by your opponent is that you are hold the weapon by the traditional thirds.
The assumption made by your opponent is that you are holding the weapon in the traditional thirds position, so his/her retreat will be shorter that necessary to get out of range.
