[15.1.1] Tokomini Bunkai Section-15 (Parry Upward, Overhand Strike, Circular Strike)
Note: Again, the Bo is a long-range weapon, and the student must understand that you must wield both ends of the weapon. Practice with this weapon must be flowing. Unfortunately, the Isshin-ryu version of this form is performed in a very static way. Fighting whether via empty hand or with a weapon it is not static. Practice with these weapons must flow.
Note: This scenario utilizes the weapons length to land an effective blow as the opponent begins his/her retreat.
Note: In this scenario we learn another stance. Footwork is important, but so is the protection of your vulnerable centerline targets. By stepping backwards into this stance most soft tissue targets are protected.
Adversary:
- Thrusts the Bo forward.
Defender:
- Step back into a horse stance to create distance and remove your vulnerable centerline targets.
- Parry the attacker’s weapon upwards with the rear of the Bo.
- Swing the Bo over and down on top of the attacker’s head or collarbone.
Adversary:
- Steps back out of range.
Defender:
- Swing the Bo backwards and move your hands down to extend the reach of the weapon.
- Swing the weapon in a circular motion like a long baseball bat.
Note: The student must not get locked into the notion that you maintain your grips on the thirds of the weapon. This technique makes you think outside the box.
