[2.9.0] Sunsu Bunkai Section-2: Counter to a One-Two Combination
[2.9.0] Section-2 Kaishaku: Counter to a One-Two Combination
[Source:] [Isshin-ryu Black Belt]
[Rating:] Basic
Information: This was an advanced concept in self-defense. Keeping your hands up protects the ribs and allows for a faster response to an attack. A modified form of this forearm position is used by modern boxers, yet this position was found in San Chin kata over a hundred years before being adopted by American boxers.
Note: The twin forearm block can be more effective if you turn your hips to remove centerline targets. This is commonly done by professional fighters today.
Note: This series is performed on both sides of the body in the kata, so it does not matter which punch is thrown first.
Part-1 Attacker: Attacker Punches
- Punch right and punch left.
Part-2 Defender:
- Middle forearm block (RH).
- Trap the Attacker’s (RH) with your (LH).
Note: This is a philosophy that you can use one hand for more than one function. In too many karate schools there is a block then punch mentality. In advanced karate you must be more flexible and be able to use one hand for more than one function.
- Hammer-fist block the Attacker’s (LH) with your (RH)
- Drive your (RH) forward after the block with a snap punch.
