[21.1.1] Sunsu Bunkai Section-2: Counter to a Front, Round, or Side Kick
[21.1.1] Section-21 Kaishaku: Counter to a Front Kick
[Source:] [Isshin-Ryu Black-Belt]
[Rating:] Basic
Part-1 Attacker: Attacker Front Kicks
Note: This technique will work with any type of kick whether it is a round, front, or side kick.
Part-2 Defender:
- Step back into a crane stance to create distance and to cover the groin.
- Trap the attacker’s kicking leg.
- Under-hook the leg and lift with the rear arm to break the attacker’s balance by pushing it upward.
- Hammer fist to midsection or grasp the opponent’s obi.
- Kick out the attacker’s supporting leg. (Sukui-nage)
Warning: This is a violent takedown. Kicking the attacker’s support leg will increase the impact of the fall. This cannot be done safely in practice, so your practice must be modified. Truthfully once the leg is pushed upwards the attacker will normally fall.
Note: This is why we kick to the legs and not above the waist.
