[3.3.3] Section-3 Kaishaku: Counter to a Punch

[Source:] Shorin-ryu Black-belt
[Rating:] Basic
Part-1 Attacker: Punches
Part-2 Defender: X-Block and Trap
  • X-block and trap the attacker’s wrist.
Part-3 Defender: Turn and Protect Centerline Targets
  • Maintain the trap.
  • Turn sideways to the attacker removing centerline target areas. (Groin, Solar Plexus, Throat)
  • Step into a crane stance to protect groin.

Theory. The Crane stance covers the groin. This kata is traditionally taught for fighting with       your back against a wall, but all techniques apply when you’re fighting from a side stance too.

Part-4 Defender: Crossover Heel Kick
  • Cross over heel thrust to attacker’s knee with right leg stepping downward as you step into a Crane or “X” stance.

Note: If you’re wearing hard soled shoes, scrape down the attacker’s shin and drive you heel into his/her instep. Mainly hyperextend his/her knee joint, or stomp down behind the knee joint to drive them to the ground.

Part-5 Ridge hand strike to Front of Throat and Throw
  • Step into horse stance with one leg behind the attacker.
  • Ridge hand strike to the opponent’s throat.
  • Drive the attacker over your knee and throw him/her with Tani-otoshi (Valley Drop)

Note: Throws in karate are very similar to those found in jujitsu except the set-up is different. In Jujitsu one tries to break the attacker’s balance while in karate we use the momentum developed during the attack.
