[10.9.0] Naihanchin Section-10 Bunkai: Counter to a Lapel Grasp

[10.9.0] Naihanchin Section-10 Bunkai (Counter to a Lapel Grasp)

[Source:] Isshin-ryu/jujitsu Black-belt
[Rating:] Moderate

Information: This bunkai uses hanto section nine and ten. One of the interpretations, for the situational self-defense found in this kata, is fighting with your back against the wall. That means you can use the wall or any other stationary object as something to throw the attacker into. You cannot be limited by your surroundings. They just may be the weapon you need to survive.

Part-1 Attacker: Grasps your Lapels for a Throw

Note: If an attacker grasps your lapels, it is to throw you. This could be to the ground or into a stationary object.

Part-2 Defender: Breaks Attacker’s Grip
  • Strike the attacker across the chest with your left forearm pinning the attacker’s arms and grab the attacker’s lapel (LH).
  • Hammer fist strike to the temple and grasp the attacker’s collar (RH).
  • Twist the adversary’s shoulders to break their balance.
  • Sweep the ankle of the attacker to the left. (De-ashi-harai)
Part-3 Attacker: Resists your Throw by Pushing to Your Right

Note: To prevent being thrown, the attacker will move his/her feet and push in the opposite direction of the throw.

Part-4 Defender: Reverses Direction and Throw Attacker
  • When the opponent resists the ankle sweep and pulls to the right, pull the attacker forwards towards your left side.

Note: This increases their desire to escape to the right.

  • When they pull to the right, rotate your hips and throw them to the right with what looks like a twin punch while in a horse stance.

Note: If there is an object close to you, slam them into the stationary object.

Note: Their momentum will facilitate the throw.

Rule: One move sets up the next. If you want to take an opponent in one direction you push him/her in the opposite direction. When you feel their resistance, you take them in the direction they’re pushing or pulling
