[5.5.5] Seisan Section-5 Bunkai: Counter to a High Front Kick

[Source:] Isshin-ryu Black-belt

[Rating:] Basic

Information: Many schools believe the trap is made with the rear hand, but if the kick is high, it can be made with the lead hand too.

Part-1 Attacker: Front Kicks
Part-2 Defender: Trap Kick
  • Step outside the kick and trap the leg with your lead hand.
  • Parry the kick away from the body with your (LH) towards your right arm.
  • Underhook the kick. (RH)

Theory: Stepping to side avoid the kick. Even if you do not trap the kick, you’re not struck by it either. The parry block pushing the kick to the side keeps you from getting kicked in the head.

Part-3 Attacker: Grabs You to Maintain Balance
Part-4 Defender: Low Parry Block to Remove the Grasp
  • Parry block or Shuto low block. (LH)

Note: The Lead arm under-hooks the leg while the rear arm prevents the opponent from tying off for balance.

Part-5 Defender: Throws with Kouchi-gari.

  • Roll your hand over and tie-off to the attacker’s left arm. (RH)
  • Slide forwards breaking the attacker’s balance.
  • Sweep your front leg behind the attacker’s support leg and reap backwards while pushing the lead leg backwards.
