AOKK Traditional Isshin-ryu: Shuto Block

AOKK Traditional Isshin-ryu: Shuto Block

This is one of the basic blocks taught to beginners. The shuto block can be both high and low. It can also be a strike as well as a block. The advantage to the shuto block is that it makes it easier to trap an attack.  The shuto block starts with one hand open with the palm facing your ear, while the other arm is across the body covering the centerline targets. As the hand moves forward it rotates, and the strike is made with the side of the hand. The lower arm is pulled to the hip. The problem with this strike is that the bones of the hand are numerous and can easily be broken.  Shoulders and hips can be turned to remove centerline targets also. This block can be made palm down or palm up.
