AOKK Kumite: Power Jab

AOKK Kumite Power Jab

The power jab is not a distraction, but a power punch. It is effective when the other fighter is trying to get inside a fighter’s reach by rushing toward them. Again, it is thrown from a balanced stance like Seisan, but as the attacker rushes in the karateka pivots ninety degrees in the stance, thus creating power by hip rotation. Lastly, turn the shoulders while rotating the stance, quickly extend the jab arm. This shoulder extension will give the fighter even more reach. Push off the rear leg to increase power and fortify the strong stance.

Range is a delicate balance with this punch. If you overextend the punch the ribs are unprotected, but if it is not thrown with enough extension, you lose your reach advantage. This punch is intended to hurt the attacker. It is not a diversion type punch.

The problem with this technique the opponent is in your circle of combat. Once the power jab is thrown, it must quickly be followed with a counterpunch. Next, you must move out of the opponent’s range. Having your hips turned ninety degrees from the opponent allows for maximum generation of power when the hips are sharply rotated back towards the attacker. While the lead arm is extended the ribs are open to attack from knees, hooks, and kicks, so you must pull the lead arm back to cover the ribs. Your straight right is affective if the opponent is at arm’s reach, but if the opponent is in too close a right hook might be more practical. Do not worry about where the strike lands. If it slams into his/her arm it will sting and give you time to retreat.

You must hit and move. Anytime you fight a bigger opponent you must move in and out of range. In this case it is the opponent that charges into your range of combat, and that aggressive movement, on their part, opens them up to this technique. You must use your footwork to create distance after your counterattack.
