AOKK Kumite: Right Cross
AOKK Kumite: Right Cross
The cross is usually set-up by the flicker jab. Again, the karateka should be in a balanced stance for this punch. It is a power punch directed mainly to the opponent’s chin or head. Power is generated by hip rotation as the punch is thrown across the body. Some power is also generated by the shoulder rotation as well. To increase power the karateka must push off the back leg and transfer his/her weight to the front leg. The heel of the back foot will not be contacting the floor. The karateka needs to tuck his/her chin behind the punch for protection and cover the other side of the chin with the lead hand. Keep the elbows as close as possible to protect the ribs. Do not lean forward to land the punch. Use your legs to maneuver inside the other fighter’s zone of combat.
The Cross provides some natural protection as it is thrown. As the body rotates the punching arm covers the chin. The fighter should still make an effort to tuck the chin behind the arm as the punch is thrown. This rotation also moves the solar plexus to the side minimizing the techniques that can be thrown to that area.
Punch Mechanics:
- Start in a guarding position with the lead hand (LH) and leg forward (LL). The rear power hand (RH) covers the chin.
- Rotate the hips pivoting on the rear foot (RF). Step sideways slightly with the lead leg (LL).
- Rotate the shoulders throwing the (RH) power hand across your body.
- Tuck the chin behind the punching arm.
- Transfer your weight to the lead leg bringing your body weight forward behind the punch while pushing off the rear leg.
- Pull the lead hand back to cover the side of your head, as the punch is delivered, and tuck the lead elbow against your ribs. Open the lead hand and turn the palm towards the opponent. [This protects the ribs and jaw.] [The open hand prepares a parry block if needed.]
- Move out of the opponent’s circle of combat and back into the guarding position.
