AOKK Advanced Kicking Technique: Flying Side Kick

AOKK Advanced Kicking Technique: Flying Side Kick

This kick takes about three running steps and a leap to generate power. The kick itself is not done until seconds before contact.  Delivering the kick is the same as a normal side-kick except you’re off the ground moving forward. Forward momentum increases power, but the downside is that it takes time to develop, and the opponent can easily step out of the kick’s path.

  • Take three steps running.
  • Push your knee into the air to gain height.
  • Rotate your hips turning your body sideways.
  • Drive your leg forwards and strike with the heel of the foot.

The only good use for this technique is if the opponent’s back is turned. If the karateka is trying to stop someone from attacking another, this surprise attack from his/her blind side will send him or her tumbling. This kick also looks good in demonstration and works well when breaking wood after jumping over students kneeling on the floor in front of the students holding the wood.
