[2.4.1] Seisan Section-2 Bunkai: (Counter to a One-Two Combination)

[Source:] Isshin-ryu Black-belt (YouTube Video)
[Rating:] Moderate

Information: I believe the instructor was trained by Harrill sensei.

Information: A very similar version of this bunkai is taught in the IWKA.

Part-1 Attacker: Punches (with the Lead Hand (Jab)
  • Attacker jabs or lead hand punches. (LH)
Part-2 Defender: Parry Blocks the Punch
  • Parry block stops the attacker’s first punch. (RH)

Note: The parry block is a type of middle block made with the palm of the hand, so to distinguish this between the middle block, utilizing the forearm and fist, we use the term “Parry” for this type of block.

Part-3 Attacker: Throws a Second Punch
  • Attacker reverse-punches or Power hand punches. This is off the back leg. (RH)
Part-4 Defender Hammer-fist Blocks
  • The hand that just delivered the parry block then, blocks the second punch by hammering it down as it returns to the obi (belt). (RH)

Theory: The hand being pulled to the obi being used as a block shows that the hand can be used more than once in a combat situation. Karateka tend to focus on utilizing one weapon pre task when one weapon can be used multiple ways.

Part-5 Attacker: Punches (with the Lead Hand (Jab)
  • Attacker jabs or lead hand punches. (LH)
Part-6 Defender Blocks and Counterpunches
  • Middle Block (LH) with the forearm.
  • Vertical snap punch (RH) to the attacker’s solar plexus.
