Note: This wrist escape drill was created by F. Dickson 5th Dan. It is solid bunkai and teaches tactile response. This is more of a drill than self defense, but if you add a throwing technique to the end of this drill it becomes a solid self defense.
Note: This bunkai also teaches the student the wrist-roll escape.
Part-1 Attacker: Grabs Both Wrists
Part-2 Defender: Wrist Roll Escapes
- Raise both hands with the palms facing you.
- Execute a double wrist-roll or snake hand escape and grasp the attacker’s wrists.
- Pull the attacker’s arms down to your hips.
- Drop your weight by sitting into a horse stance.
- Pull the opponent forward breaking their balance.
Part-3 Attacker: Wrist Roll Escapes
- Raise both hands with the palms facing you.
- Execute a double wrist-roll or snake hand escape and grasp the defender’s wrists.
- Pull the defender’s arms down to your hips.
- Drop your weight by sitting into a horse stance.
- Pull the opponent forward breaking their balance.
Note: This is a drill that teaches the student the wrist-roll escape. It can be practiced by both students.
Important: The Horse-stance is not a fighting stance. It is however, a grappling stance. From this stance you can throw the opponent with uki-waza or tani-otoshi. Modern karate has lost some solid technique when it moved away from throwing and locking technique. It also lost real self-defense.
Note: Dropping into the horse-stance, can also prevent you from being thrown.
