FL1.0 Ukemi Forward Break Fall Phase 1,2,3 and 4
Forward Fall-FL01 (Zeiupo Ukemi)
This may be the simplest fall to master. Children when learning to walk will fall many times. This is the way they fall, but they’re resilient and almost never suffer any trauma. Simple as it may appear, this natural falling, too has certain intricacies. To begin learning this fall the student should start from a kneeling position. Next the student will move to a squat and finally a stand. The advanced student mast be able to perform a lay out or jump and forward fall. The AOKK Ukemi is different than that of Judo in that we finish the fall and counterattack. In Judo the student simply stands again and falls.
Forward Fall Technique Stage-One :
- Kneel on the edge of the mat.
- Relax and fall forwards.
- Prior to contact with the mat turn your head to the side. (Keep your mouth shut.)
- Slap the tatami with your forearms and palms of the hand to break your fall.
- Stand up turn 180° and punch left and right.
Warning: Common mistakes made by beginners are landing on their elbows or hands. Landing on the elbows can cause bruising and joint damage. Landing on the wrists can cause sprains and dislocation.
Note: Another error beginners make is not turning the head to the side. This prevents their head from smacking the mat after your momentum slows down.
Note: Opening your mouth can cause you to bite your tongue and slam your teeth together.
Forward Fall Technique Stage-Two :
- Squat on the edge of the mat.
- Relax and kick your feet out to fall forwards.
- Prior to contact with the mat turn your head to the side. (Keep your mouth shut.)
- Slap the tatami with your forearms and palms of the hand to break your fall.
- Pull onto one knee and back kick.
- Stand up turn 180° and punch left and right.
Note: When you start this phase of the break fall, you want to focus on the fall first. When the fall is mastered add the second piece and that is the counterattack.
Forward Fall Technique Stage-Three :
- Stand at the edge of the mat.
- Relax and fall forwards.
- Prior to contact with the mat turn your head to the side. (Keep your mouth shut.)

- Roll to the side and side kick.
- Stand up turn 180° and punch left and right.
Note: When you start this phase of the break fall, you want to focus on the fall first. When the fall is mastered add the second piece and that is the counterattack.
Forward Fall Technique Stage-Four:
