Ukemi FL1.2 Backwards Fall Phase 1,2,3,&4

Ukemi Backwards Fall-FL1.2 (Koho Ukemi)

This is also a simple fall to master. Reaps make up a number of the AOKK jujitsu throws. To practice reaping someone’s feet from under them both parties need to know how to fall safely. Simple as it may appear it too has certain intricacies. To begin learning this fall the student should start from a kneeling position. Next the student will move to a squat and finally a stand. Trapping a reaping an opponent’s kick is a fundamental technique taught in the AOKK. When a kick goes above the waist, it should be trapped, and a takedown should immediately follow. To practice this the karateka must know how to fall backwards.

Back Fall Technique Stage-One:

  1. Squat on the edge of the mat.
  2. Relax and kick your feet out to fall backwards.
  3. Prior to contact with the mat drop your chin to your chest. (Keep your mouth shut.)
  4. Slap the tatami with your forearms and palms first to break your fall.
  5. As your back touches the mat roll backwards.
  6. Roll back to your feet stand-up and punch right and left.

Note: Common mistakes made by beginners are landing on rear-ends or elbows. This jams the spine and can injure the elbow joints.

Note: Another error beginners make is not tucking the chin, and their head smacks the tatami.

Note: Opening your mouth can cause you to bite your tongue and slam your teeth together.
