FL1.3 Side Fall (Sokuho Ukemi) Phase 1,2,&3

Side fall must be practiced on the left and right sides. This fall must be master before moving onto more advanced techniques.

Practicing falling to the side (Sokuho Ukemi,) should begin with the student lying on his side slapping the mat. The student should slap with one arm at a forty-five-degree angle while the other hand rests on his/her obi (belt). The arm should be kept close to the side of the body. Side Fall must be practiced on both sides.

Side Fall Technique Stage-One :

  1. Lay on the mat.
  2. Place the non-slapping arm across your abdomen.
  3. Prior to contact with the mat turn your head to the side. (Keep your mouth shut.)
  4. Slap the tatami with the forearm and palms on the side you’re landing.

Note: Keep the arm close to the side of the body, but not too close.

  1. Roll and swing your feet in the air to spread the impact across the side of your body.
  2. Roll to your side and side kick.

Side Fall Technique Stage-Two :

  1. Squat on the mat.
  2. Relax and kick one foot out to fall and fall to your side.
  3. Place the non-slapping arm across your abdomen.
  4. Prior to contact with the mat turn your head to the side. (Keep your mouth shut.)
  5. Slap the tatami with the forearm and palms on the side you’re landing.
  6. Roll and swing your feet in the air to spread the impact across the side of your body.
  7. Roll to the side and Side kick.
  8. Roll to your back and front kick.

Side Fall Technique Stage-Three:

  1. Stand on the mat.
  2. Lower your body down and squat down on one leg.
  3. Relax and fall to your side.
  4. Place the non-slapping arm across your abdomen.
  5. Prior to contact with the mat turn your head to the side. (Keep your mouth shut.)
  6. Slap the tatami with the forearm and palms on the side you’re landing.
  7. Roll and swing your feet in the air to spread the impact across the side of your body.
  8. Roll to the side and Side kick.
  9. Roll to your black and front kick.
  10. Stand and Punch Left and Right.
