Come early to warm-up and to stretch-out. Black belts will be taught Range two & three jujitsu/grapping techniques if we have enough senior black-belts to cover class. Be sure to get Sensei Frank to sign-off on your Fundamental (Kata) or throwing technique before leaving class. Keeping your records updated is your responsibility. Your record is the only way we can track your progress towards your instructor’s rating.
Isshin-ryu Karate
Isshin-ryu karate was formally founded by Shimabuku Tatsuo sensei in 1954. Shimabuku sensei was born in 1906 and died in 1975. Master Shimabuku was trained by Kyan Chotoku, Motobu Choki, and Miyagi Chojun. Kyan sensei was a master of Shorin-ryu. Motobu sensei never formally founded a style, yet his system is referred to as Motobu-ryu. He was known through out Okinawa and Japan for his tremendous fighting ability. Miyagi sensei was the founder of Goju-ryu. Kyan and Motobu sensei both died before the end of the Second World War. Miyagi sensei died in 1953. Shimabuku sensei’s weapons training came from Taira Shinkin. The weapons of Isshin-ryu are the bo, sai, and tuifa/tonfa. Weapons training is a requirement for advanced rank.
