[T9.01] Sukui-nage: Var-1 (Leg Throw from a Bear hug)

[T9.01] Sukui-nage: Variation (Leg Throw from a Bear hug)

Translation: (sukui) scooping, (nage) throw

This is a simple counter to the common rear bear-hug. You will be on the ground, so it important that you’ve been trained in at technique.

Warning: Do not attempt these techniques without a qualified AOKK instructor’s supervision.

AOKK Category:
  • Dumping Throws
Opening Technique:

The attacker places you in a rear bear-hug. You also can start the dance by striking backwards with your head. You may even break nose.

Execution:
  • Bend forwards and grasp uke’s leg with both hands.
  • Next pick-up uke’s leg and arch backwards.
  • Push backwards hard with your legs.

Note: When uke is on one leg he/she can be thrown.

Note: Land on top of uke with your body weight.

Note: This happened to me once. An acquaintance wanted to know how I would respond if he attacked me from behind. When he landed, his head hit the floor and my body weight all landed on top of him. In my defense he surprised me and was much larger than me. He could have been seriously hurt. A few days latter we both laughed about the incident.

Grips:
  1. Under-hook uke’s legs with both arms.

Warning: Never go to the ground if there are multiple opponents.

Note: Follow this technique with an arm-bar, mount above the hips, or simply walk away. If you choose the mount, follow immediately with open hand strikes, closed hand strikes, and elbow strikes. In sport you may choose to apply a choke or lock the opponent to gain a submission.
